DGT Tax Audits and Examinations Poised to Outpace Last Year

JAKARTA, DDTCNews - In pursuit of its ambitious tax revenue target, the government is poised to intensify joint audits, encompassing both supervision and audits of taxpayers. These audit and examination activities are expected to proceed more aggressively than in previous years, making the issue one of the most closely watched topics among netizens over the past week.

The move constitutes part of the authorities’ broader effort to ensure national tax revenue expands by 23% throughout the 2026 fiscal year.

To achieve this target, the Directorate General of Taxes (DGT) is also continuing to optimise the performance of the coretax system to engender higher reliability in supporting taxpayer supervision activities.

“We are intensifying several areas this year which, perhaps, had not been pursued as intensively in previous years,” said Director General of Taxes, Bimo Wijayanto.

Bimo explained that the DGT is currently undertaking intensive joint audits and examinations of taxpayers’ tax obligations. The initiative is being conducted in collaboration with other vertical units within the Ministry of Finance, namely the Directorate General of Customs and Excise (DGCE) and the Directorate General of Budget.

The DGT is also cooperating with the Indonesian National Police and the Indonesian Financial Transaction Reports and Analysis Center (Pusat Pelaporan and Analisis Transaksi Keuangan/PPATK in Indonesian), both of which are part of the Tax Revenue Security Synergy Task Force. In addition, the tax authority is partnering with Indonesia's National Government Internal Auditor (Badan Pengawasan Keuangan dan Pembangunan/BPKP in Indonesian) in conducting tax audits.

As another strategic measure, Bimo revealed that the DGT is currently auditing taxpayers participating in the second Tax Amnesty programme, officially known as the Voluntary Disclosure Program (Program Pengungkapan Sukarela/PPS in Indonesian), launched in 2022.

“We are also finalising examinations of PPS participants who underreported their assets. We are reassessing the accuracy of their repatriation commitments and reviewing whether there were assets not properly disclosed during the PPS,” he elaborated.

Moreover, the DGT is also examining taxpayer groups while simultaneously refining the coretax to make it smoother, more accurate and more effective. The improvements are expected to enhance coretax’s reliability in supporting tax examinations.

“Of course, we will continue developing the coretax. With improved data quality and integration, supervision can become far more effective,” Bimo concluded.

In addition to developments surrounding tax supervision, several other issues likewise drew strong public attention over the past week. These included plans to establish a financial center in Bali, the dismissal of two tax officials linked to tax refunds, the prospect of a bonus for the director general of taxes and the latest update regarding micro, small and medium enterprise (MSME) final income tax.

Below is the full roundup of the week’s tax stories.

New Final Income Tax Regulation Awaiting Prabowo’s Approval

The Directorate General of Taxes (DGT) disclosed that the draft government regulation (Gov. Reg.) revising the final income tax regime for MSMEs has been submitted to the Presidential Palace since last year.

However, Director General of Taxes, Bimo Wijayanto, stated that the DGT could not yet confirm when the regulation would be formally enacted and promulgated by President Prabowo Subianto.

“I do not know exactly when that will happen, because in fact we submitted it last year. This year, we resubmitted it, and it is already on the President’s desk. We are simply waiting now,” Bimo stated.

Kura-Kura SEZ Set to Become a Financial Center

The government has begun preparations to position Bali as a special economic zone (SEZ) dedicated to the financial sector.

Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs, Airlangga Hartarto, stated that the Kura-Kura Bali SEZ is among the areas being considered for development into a financial center.

“The government is currently finalising the regulatory framework that will serve as the foundation for establishing a financial-sector SEZ in Bali, designed to accommodate various requirements for developing a financial hub, ranging from governance schemes to facilities capable of attracting global investors,” he remarked.

Two Tax Officials Removed Over Refund Disbursements

Minister of Finance, Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa, claimed he would remove 2 tax officials alleged to have approved excessive tax refund disbursements to taxpayers.

Purbaya stated that the decision followed an investigation into 5 tax officials responsible for the highest volume of refund disbursements.

“I am extremely serious about these refunds because the outflows have become somewhat uncontrolled. I have investigated 5 officials with the largest refund disbursements, and today 2 of them will be dismissed,” he claimed.

Bonus Proposed for the Director General of Taxes

Minister of Finance, Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa, jokingly suggested granting a bonus to Director General of Taxes, Bimo Wijayanto, for what he considered to be improvements in the coretax’s performance.

Purbaya said Coretax had undergone numerous refinements, enabling millions of taxpayers to use the platform to file their annual tax returns. Although the system’s performance is not yet perfect, he believes Bimo and the DGT have succeeded in improving it significantly.

“As such, Mr. Bimo has done fairly well. Perhaps he deserves a small bonus. We started from an implementation that was extremely poor, and now we have achieved results like these, despite existing shortcomings,” he remarked.

Supreme Court Justice Selection Includes 11 Tax Specialists

The Judicial Commission (Komisi Yudisial/KY in Indonesian) held competency assessments for Supreme Court justice candidates on 5-6 May 2026.

The selection process was attended by 137 candidates, comprising 64 candidates for the criminal chamber, 27 for the civil chamber, 35 for the religious chamber and 11 for the state administrative (tata usaha negara/TUN in Indonesian) chamber specialising in tax matters.

“We hope the entire selection process will produce judicial candidates who are not only academically and technically outstanding, but who also possess strong and commendable character, sound integrity, resilient personalities and a high commitment to upholding the law and justice,” said Chairperson of the Judicial Commission, Abdul Chair Ramadhan.
