JAKARTA, DDTCNews - Deputy Minister of Finance, Nurkholisoh Ibnu Aman, is of the view that artificial intelligence (AI) is needed to assist in identifying tax revenue potential whilst detecting non-compliance.

Despite the various risks arising from the use of AI, Nurkholisoh said such risks are not a reason to reject AI developments. The use of AI also does not transfer the responsibility of officials for decisions that have been made.

"AI gives signals, provides guidance and assists us, but it is still humans who decide. It is still the tax auditors in the field who decide. It is still the officials who sign off and bear responsibility," said Nurkholisoh, as quoted on Wednesday (28/10/2026).

There are 3 principal risks associated with the use of AI. First, the risk of being deceived by deepfake technology developments that are capable of manipulating images, videos and audio to resemble authentic conditions or statements.

Second, the risk of excessive dependence on AI, which may diminish critical thinking, recall and information comprehension. Third, the risk of information leakage resulting from entering confidential data into AI applications that lack the protection or authorisation required by the organisation.

Notwithstanding these various risks, AI has the potential to enhance employee productivity whilst strengthening the execution of the Ministry of Finance's (MoF's) duties on both the revenue and expenditure sides.

In terms of expenditures, AI can be used to analyse the benefits of budgetary allocations received by the public, whether from social assistance programmes or ministerial expenditure. The use of AI is expected to provide a comprehensive picture of the benefits derived from the state budget (anggaran penerimaan dan belanja negara/APBN in Indonesian).

"In terms of expenditures, AI can help ensure that every rupiah we allocate, that we budget, genuinely delivers real benefit," said Nurkholisoh.

For information, Nurkholisoh had previously disclosed that the Directorate General of Taxes (DGT) is developing a dashboard and AI capable of mapping the assets of high net worth individuals (HNWI).

Nurkholisoh said the dashboard in question is able to present data on the family members of individuals, their assets and companies as well as the relationships between the data contained within the dashboard.

"We are at the final stage of adding AI that can assist us in reading news and corporate information disclosures related to those individuals," he said last month. (rig)
