Going further back, Suahasil's career began as a lecturer at the Faculty of Economics and Business, University of Indonesia, in 1999. In the field of economics, he attained the rank of Professor of Economics in 2009.

He was active in academia, serving as Head of the Postgraduate Programme in Economics from 2004–2005, Head of the Demographic Institute from 2005–2008 and Chair of the Department of Economics from 2009–2013.

As both an academic and a practitioner in the field of economics, Suahasil was widely involved in analysing and advocating public policies. He also served as a member of the Minister of Finance's Advisory Team on Fiscal Decentralisation from 2009–2011.
