Purbaya Not Yet Keen to Impose New Taxes Next Year
JAKARTA, DDTCNews — Minister of Finance, Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa, has stated that the government does not yet plan to introduce new taxes next year.
According to Purbaya, there would be room for new taxes if the national economy is able to grow by 6% for several consecutive quarters.
"If growth reaches 6%, will I immediately impose taxes? If it is only one quarter, perhaps not yet, but that room would open up considerably," said Purbaya, as quoted on Tuesday (18/8/2026).
The imposition of new taxes will be implemented by taking into account economic conditions over several quarters and people's purchasing power.
"Let's say by the end of this year we can achieve 6%, and in the first quarter [of 2027] we can achieve 6% again; we may well introduce new taxes," said Purbaya.
Next year's tax target has been proposed at IDR2,591.4 trillion, representing growth of 12.1% compared to this year's tax revenue outlook of IDR2,310.8 trillion. The proposed target in the 2027 draft state budget is equivalent to 9.27% of GDP.
To achieve and exceed that target, Purbaya said his office will continue to improve the tax collection efforts of the tax authority.
"If I succeed in improving the way we collect taxes this year, by being able to improve the tax ratio, there is still upside potential from tax collection next year," said Purbaya.
The tax policies being prepared by the government for next year are as follows: first, strengthening the continuity of tax reform and harmonising international tax policy.
Second, improving compliance through technology, synergy, and law enforcement. Third, strengthening the digital economy tax system. Fourth, targeted incentives to encourage investment and downstream industry development. (dik)
