BRICS Nations Establish 2 New Tax Working Groups, Including Indonesia

NEW DELHI, DDTCNews - BRICS nations have established 2 new working groups in the area of tax cooperation, namely a working group on international taxation and transfer pricing and one on government revenue statistics.

The establishment of both working groups was among the outcomes of the BRICS Heads of Tax Authorities Meeting in New Delhi, India. The meeting also marked the conclusion of India's chairmanship of the BRICS tax cooperation track.

"The meeting formally adopted several key outcomes," read a press statement from the Indian government, cited on Friday (25/9/2026).

The meeting was attended by the heads of tax authorities from all 10 BRICS member states, namely Brazil, China, Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Indonesia, Iran, Russia, South Africa and the United Arab Emirates. Director General of Taxes, Bimo Wijayanto, attended on behalf of Indonesia to discuss tax experiences and challenges faced by BRICS member states.

Indian Minister of Finance, Nirmala Sitharaman, stated that BRICS tax cooperation during India's chairmanship focused on 3 themes: technology, administration and human resources.

She noted that data and digital infrastructure play a pivotal role in making tax administration more accurate and accessible. She also emphasised the importance of building institutional mechanisms and working frameworks that can sustain cooperation between countries.

In addition, Sitharaman highlighted the need to continually strengthen capacity development and professional relations between tax authorities.

She also underscored the importance of the BRICS nations' perspectives in multilateral tax discussions, including in negotiations related to the UN Framework Convention on International Tax Cooperation.

The meeting resulted in the ratification of the BRICS Tax Progress Report 2026. The report serves as a comprehensive record of tax cooperation outcomes during India's BRICS chairmanship.

India subsequently handed over the chairmanship of the BRICS tax cooperation track to China, which will assume the chairmanship in 2027. (dik)
