JAKARTA, DDTCNews - The Financial Services Authority (Otoritas Jasa Keuangan/OJK in Indonesian) is urging the government to reduce the tax rate on crypto asset sale transactions to 0.1%.

OJK Board of Commissioners Member Adi Budiarso stated that crypto asset sale transactions are currently subject to a final Article 22 Income Tax of 0.21%. The said rate is set out in Minister of Finance Regulation (MoF Reg.) 50/2025.

"The industry is currently pushing for whether the income tax rate could be reduced from 0.21% to 0.1%," said Adi at a seminar entitled Taxes, Digital Economy, and Cryptoassets: Perspective of Shariah, as cited on Friday (16/10/2026).

Adi stated that the rate of 0.1% is equivalent to the final income tax rate that has long been applied to the sale of shares on the stock exchange as governed by Government Regulation (Gov. Reg.) 14/1997.

Reducing the tax rate on crypto asset sales from 0.21% to 0.1% is one measure aimed at encouraging traders to conduct crypto asset trading through registered domestic exchangers rather than through foreign exchangers.

In addition to pressing for a reduction in the final Article 22 income tax rate, OJK has proposed easing the tax treatment of liquidity provider (market maker) activities. Further, OJK is also advocating for the prevention of double taxation on transactions between crypto asset traders.

In response to the proposed rate reduction, Director General of Taxes, Bimo Wijayanto, stated that lowering the tax rate on crypto asset sales is a reasonable policy option. However, the government also needs to consider its impact on tax revenue and taxpayer compliance.

"If it genuinely makes sense to reduce it with broader coverage, then of course we have no objection, but we also need to look at the potential loss as well as the opportunity to broaden taxpayer compliance," said Bimo. (dik)
